Liberian Born DJ, Val Fleury Shares Her

Music & Fashion Style As A Creative

We met at a recent Snapchat event. We basically danced with the other 80 or so students at Snapchat's annual SnapFest. But Val made sure to bring her best attitude and enthusiasm, and she put on a show that was worth watching in person. Regrettably, our event was only available online. Prior to Snapfest, We contacted Val to learn more about her creative journey and how she remains current as a DJ, producer, and musical connoisseur. Her sound is symbolic, like the Birkins of Brooklyn, and raw to the uninitiated ear, yet her artistic flair captivates and draws listeners in. Val creates a space for background and culture to coexist.

ET: What’s your earliest memory of DJing that you have and why?

Val Fleury: My family moved to the U.S. in the 90s, I remember hearing so much new and exciting music on the radio. I would record my favorite tracks on cassette tapes and share the mix-tapes with my friends. It was a hit! I now realize that was preparing me for music curation and other elements that are essential for being a great professional DJ.

ET: How do your upbringing and culture influence the music you play as a DJ?

Val Fleury: As a Liberian who grew up primarily in the United States, I've found a way to survive in my own lane by fusing my cultures: techno and house with an African flavor.

ET: This month, ElewaTv continues our theme of Fashion Statement and its relationship to style and identity. As a creative, how would you describe your musical and fashion tastes?

Val Fleury: My musical and fashion tastes would be described as minimal but bold, which is very me!

ET: When you're DJing, what's your go-to fashion piece?

Val Fleury: Rings are simple, yet they can make a big statement. They also appear to be fly when the lights hit them.

ET: Have you DJ’d any fashion events and what was that like for you?

Val Fleury: Music and fashion go hand in hand. I've had the opportunity to perform at events ranging from Riccardo Tisci x Nike's launch in Shanghai to NYFW parties to Versace's Superbowl event in Houston. I'm looking forward to doing more.

ET:What have been some of your favorite DJ sets to play?

Val Fleury: I enjoy performing in front of various crowds, such as festivals, radio, poolside, and raves. I love playing in underground, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ communities. I appreciate how they usually attract music fans, create community and diversity, and people aren't afraid to dance. In any situation, reading a room is vital. You know you've nailed it when people refuse to leave the dance floor.

ET:What are your top 5 songs at the moment?

Val Fleury:

ET: African brands shout out! We love to see it what are some of your favorites?

Val Fleury:

  • Telfar

  • The Bombchel Factory

  • Suakoko Betty
